AIDS Sucks... Need I say more?

Ronald and Russell

 From June 1-7, 2008, I'm bicycling in AIDS/LifeCycle 7.

It's a 7-day, 545-mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to make a world of difference in the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS.

Help me support the HIV/AIDS-related services of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center by giving what you can.

We'll keep riding until AIDS and HIV are a thing of the past.

I sure do like pumpkins, Cotton...

Brian Thompson (10/12/07 9:53PM): Your a great guy. I think its awesome your so dedicated in all areas your life.

Michael C. Cuddy (10/12/07 7:57PM): Russell, some will ask you why ride, and with your indelible self deprecating humor there more then likely will be many a funny quip that will suffice to answer. But after that, in a quick serious moment let them know that it is for your brother, and all your brothers and sisters, for this is the ride of a lifetime. Emotions are how we experience life... anger, sadness, joy, pride, love... and in what better way could one truly live a life then for the most noble cause of love, love of a friend, of a lover, of family, of a brother. Tell them that you ride... for life.

Sara (10/11/07 3:23PM): I am so proud of you. I can't wait to start training too. It's only about 8 months away. I am glad I could be part of this journey with you.

Ronald Westcott (9/14/07 9:54AM): Hey kiddo, did you get a bike yet?

The New Truths...

1. There are good people left in this world (contrary to what I may say on any given day)

2. Cycling is an expensive sport

3. My shoulder still has not healed

4. Riding in 100 degree heat without having eaten anything can, nay did, lead to bonking

5. I'm not invincable

My how the time does fly...

Well, I completed the Paul Hulse Century.  As it turned out, in the week prior to the century, I pulled a muscle in my right shoulder.  Somewhere around mile 25 of the century, my shoulder began to burn.  By mile 50, I was extremely sore.  By mile 75, I had taken 8 Advil and 2 Tylenol.  And by mile 100, I described the pain as searing.  So in the interest of proper healing, I have taken the last month off.  While I feel certain my shoulder will be ok for the ride, I am not so thrilled about having lost a month of training.  That said, I will be getting back on my bike soon!  I will be working hard (buy not so hard I'll risk injury) to be ready for the ride!

Thank you all for your words of encouragement!

Too Long

Wow, what a week.  So here it is Friday night, and I'm getting ready for bed as tomorrow morning I will be riding in the "Paul Hulse Century".  It's a 100 mile training ride from Santa Clartia to Ventura and back.  This ride will be the longest I've done thus far.  I'm incredably excited and, I suppose, a little nervous as well.  In preparation for tomorrow, I've ridden about 130 miles this week.  I'm not sure if it was enough training for tomorrow, but I suppose it will have to be.  Anyhow,  I'll check back in after the ride tomorrow!

...From West to East

So, for some reason when I head out, I have a tendancy to ride West.  Not sure why.  So today I decided to give East a try.  What a great ride.  I went through Toluca Lake, Glendale, Griffith park, and Los Feliz before I turned around and hopped on the L.A. River Bike path to come home.  With the exception of one stinky (and I do mean smelly) section of the bike path, It was an excellent little 26 mile ride.

12 Weeks!

Holy crap!  Where did the year go?

I 've done 45 miles in the last two weeks, and me thinks it's about time to step it up a bit, lest I find myself less prepared than I'd like come June.

I'm heading out now...

Holy Balls, 42 Degrees is Cold!!!

OK, so 5 AM rolls around and I couldn't sleep.  So I figured I would take advantage of being up early.  I put on my deliciously THIN biking apparel, grabbed my Carmex and a bottle of water, and headed out the door.  My god.  Now I was, of course, aware that I was heading out before sunrise but I didn't think it would be that cold.  Well, as it turnes out, that flaming ball of gas in the sky actually makes a difference in the temprature.  Who knew, and why wasn't I told!?!  I gave it all I could, but I was only good for 7 miles today.  I head back out tomorrow... In the afternoon.

Work insanity

Work has been a bit crazy. But I am still getting in some riding here and there. Once the holidays are over, I'll be hitting it hard... That said I've done two more weekend rides of 28 and 32 miles.

Finally, a moment to report

Hey there y'all!

First, let me say that the messages of support mean so much to me. They truly help to keep me motivated when the going gets tough.

So, even though I haven't had time to report, don't think I haven't been training.

About 4 weeks ago, I had the pleasure of going on a "training ride" with the folks from Shifting Gears. We rode 30 miles in the Manhattan Beach area. They were a font of knowledge and not only gave me a lot of great pointers, but more importantly they gave me a boost in confidence and assured me that when the time came I would be more than able to complete the Lifecycle ride.

Since then I have been on two other 30 mile rides and have ridden my bike to work and back three times. So for those of you playing the home game, that means I have ridden roughly 170 miles since I got my bike! I will be increasing the length of my weekend rides in January. So I look forward to really racking up the training miles come the beginning of the year.

Thanks again for the support!

Stupid me...

So I brought my bike in to the shop to complain about the malfunctioning derailleurs. Apparently I'm an idiot. They're not broken; I was just not using them properly. I swear I'm usually fairly mechanically competent... Or maybe I'm just kidding myself.

Stupid bike shop.

They said they made an adjustment to the derailleurs and they would work fine now. So at 8 o'clock or so, I hopped on my bike to pedal home only to find out they still don't work. Aaargh!

At any rate, I rode 8 more miles but it took 45 minutes this time. It's a lot more uphill from Hollywood to Studio City as it turns out... Good times.

Rode to work today!

Studio City to Hollywood - 8 miles - 35 minutes. Thats only 10 minutes more than it takes me to drive! I'll take my bike in to get the derailleurs fixed this morning.

1st ride

So I learned 4 things...

1 - Practice getting in and out of clipless pedals in the privacy of your own home, before you embarrass yourself publicly. 2 - Lip balm is soooo important. 3 - Sunglasses are a must. 4 - Whoever invented the bicycle seat was a sadist! That thing is like a medieval torture device!

My derailleurs don't seem to be working. I can't seem to shift gears, so I rode the whole time in my easiest gear. I guess it could have been worse... It could've been raining.

All in all though, things went well. I rode 16 miles in about 45 minutes... Then my butt needed a break.

Money Pit

Holy crap, you could spend a fortune upgrading these things. Not to mention the money you spend just to get out and ride... Bike computer, water bottles, pump, spare tube, patch kit, under seat bag, front and rear lights, clipless pedals, the shoes, shorts, shirts... The list goes on and on.

Now would be an appropriate time to thank my girlfriend/benefactor for both her emotional and financial support in getting my training off the ground... Thank you baby, this could not happen without you.

Ohhhh... Thats what a derailleur is.

O.K. It's starting to make more sense. It goes like this...

Go to a bike shop and ask them to tell you what you need, have them explain it all using visual aids, and brace yourself as you're about to spend a lot of money.

What in God's name is a derailleur?

O.k. I'm not the type to do this whole blog thing, but for posterity's sake here it goes...

I'm looking into finally buying a bike. I am so seriously in over my head. I don't know what most of the accoutrements and measurements are supposed to mean to me. When did bike riding get so complex?
