I'm Riding to End AIDS

Dear Friends and Family,

In 2001 I had the privilege of participating in the California Aids Ride, where 3000 bike riders pedaled 545 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles each generating a minimum of $2700 of donated dollars needed to fight the effects and someday finding the cure for AIDS. It's been seven years since my son-in-law Jeff and I raised over $3000 each for that event. In spite of millions of donated dollars to fight Aids in the United States, the numbers in Africa, Eastern Europe and Latin America are rising. In Africa alone, 25 million people are living with HIV/AIDS with life expectancies an average of only 48 years.

"The Ride to End Aids" is June 1-7 2008. Once again I will be riding with 2500 cyclists and 400 support people 545 miles from San Francisco to LA. We will be raising money to provide necessary HIV/AIDS research, services and education.

I have committed to raising $2500 and would very much appreciate your support.

To donate on-line, please click on the link http://www.aidslifecycle.org/5960 Choose the "Support Jim" button, select donation amount and your payment method. I appreciate any amount donated!

My website has additional links giving you more information on the AIDS pandemic plus my frequently updated blog on how my training and fundraising are progressing.

Please remember that any donation is deeply appreciated.

Home stretch

I'm receiving e-mails from the AIDSLIFECYCLE coordinators with lists of personal items to bring along for the week long bike ride starting June 1st. The list includes everything from three changes of bike clothing, miscellaneous personal hygiene accessories, one or two spare bike tires, sleeping bag w/ inflatable air mattress and the best item on the list was "ear plugs". We are camping out each day in camp grounds, fair grounds, parks and one night at the King City Airport. ( they do close down the runway ). If your wondering about my bicycle, I take it to a drop off place near the Hollywood Bowl a few days prior to June 1, it's put on a large truck along with hundreds of other bikes, wrapped in blankets and is waiting for me at the start line in SF. Very well organized event. The bottom line is lots of money is raised that helps the AIDS cause around the world. Thanks to each of you who have donated to my fundraising commitment. To date I'm within $500 of my goal with May 15th as the deadline. I should make it!! I'll post several pictures from the ride for those who I have supported me via e-mail sometime in June.

Thanks for all your support!

Things are looking up!

Since I first committed to participate in this years AIDS/LifeCycle event. my biggest concern was the fundraising part. Given my personality I'm reluctant asking people for money. even though the cause is a worthy one. Now it's almost April with a little more than one and a half months to go before my minimum funding of $2500 in due and I'm now within $1000 of my minimum. Many thanks to those of you reading this blog who have supported me by your generous contributions.

As far as my training schedule, my son in law Jeff Mabry (whose also riding the ALC event) and I recently rode the Solvang 100 and felt great doing it. I've been riding 2 to 3 times a week averaging 35 to 50 miles per ride. I'm enjoying the challenge getting in tiptop shape before June.

Thanks again for all your support.

March update

In less than 90 days I'll be riding my Trek rode bike down the coast from SF to LA. For those of you who don't cycle, it can be very challenging and for those who cycle frequently, it's like a mini vacation. For me it's both a vacation and emotional experience. Everyday of the ride you meet people with so many different reasons for participating, from loosing a loved one to AIDS, being HIV positive, knowing a friend whose ill or just wanting to contribute in a small way as I do.

My fund raising has finally surpassed $1000 with several promises of $ support. Hope to reach my minimum goal of $2500 by April. Pass the word, it's a great cause.

Thanks for your continued support

Fighting HIV/AIDS is working!!

Since I commented riding in the June 2008 AIDS ride back in January, I've become aware of numerous news reports from different parts of the world  of positive breakthroughs in HIV/AIDS medicine, education and support. Your donated dollars are working no matter how big or small the amount. Google HIV/AIDS, the information is endless.

To enhance my bike training I've joined the conejo valley bike club. The club sponsors several group rides during the week with all levels of riders. It's more motivating riding with groups that challenge you than always riding solo. Things are looking up!!

To my many supporters so far, thanks for your generous contributions. I've collected about 25% of my minimum goal of $2500 to date. Pass the word!!

Rainy days

Despite all the rainy days I have been keeping up with my training regiment, either inside on the treadmill or on my bike trainer. Not as good as being outside, but some workout is better than no workout. I did manage a 30 mile ride on Thursday, very chilly. was good to get outdoors.

I've had several customer at the Beanscene ask about the AIDS bike ride, most seem curious about riding 500 plus miles in a week. Most people don't ride bikes or if they do it's very casual. The usual comment is "whoa, that's a long ways". For people who ride frequently and have quality bikes. the trip from SF to LA is a challenge but also very rewarding because of the money raised for the HIV/AIDS cause.

Doing the ride each day is easy compared to asking people for a donation. $2500 minimum is a lot of money, but what really matters is what the money can do for those unfortunate lives here in the US and especially in Africa.

Thanks for your support

Getting started

It's tough doing all this registration stuff while riding my bike!!!  I am looking forward to the training and getting ready for this ride.  Stay tuned for "in depth reports" on my training rides.

Jim

On Friday, the Beanscene took most of my day fixing this and that, so I was forced to use my indoor bike trainer for an hour. For those of you who don't know my home setup I have a dedicated workout room with a very good treadmill, a single speed road bike attached to a bike trainer, free weights, a big mirror to look at myself and a tv. I like going to gyms but I seem to exercise more having my own gym in my home.

Saturday was a beautiful day, so I escaped out the back door of the Beanscene around 2 and mounted my Trek road bike for a 30 mile ride. It was warm when I started but around 3:30 my feet and hands started to numb. Still a good ride!
